Atlanta Streetcar Proposes 50 Miles of New Routes, Including Buckhead

Months after the Atlanta Beltline began ferrying passengers along a 2.7 mile track in the heart of Downtown, Atlanta Beltline has proposed a massive expansion of the system.

According to Curbed Atlanta, the proposal was presented at a Beltline meeting last month and called for 50 miles of new streetcar routes ringing the Beltline and bisecting it with north-south and east-west routes. The longest line, as proposed, would span from Ft. McPherson to Buckhead’s Lenox Square.

Information released by Atlanta Beltline claims the “Priority Streetcar Network” would add the previously-mentioned 50 miles of streetcar track, as well as 18 miles of new or enhanced transit services interacting with the new routes. The priority plan also calls for circulators and shuttle services to get people to the streetcars.

Curbed reports that the plans for the expanded streetcar service call for the same infrastructure and mixed-traffic approach that the current streetcar loop uses, which could mean additional traffic delays for motorists and streetcar riders alike.
