Custom Design... What will you create next?

There are thousands of engagement rings out there, and you feel like you’ve seen them all. You like the halo of one ring, the side profile of another, and the stone shape of a third, but you can’t find the one perfect ring that you know she’ll say ‘Yes!” to. And the reason for this is simple; the perfect ring doesn’t exist. It doesn’t exist, because YOU haven’t created it yet! With your creativity and our know-how here at Union Diamond, the sky’s the limit to what we can create!

So gather all of your ideas, that perfect diamond cut, gorgeous engraving, maybe some delicate milgrain detailing and our talented Custom Department will take all of those pieces and turn it into the ring of her dreams. It really is that simple. 

So how exactly does Custom Design work? Well, after you bring all of your ideas to us, we’ll bring them to life with sketches and CAD/CAM technology. What is CAD/CAM do?  CAD/CAM, which stands for Computer Assisted Design and Computer Assisted manufacturing, allows us to use computer technology for the process of design. We can take any drawing, even if you’re like me and it looks more like a hippo than a ring, and turn it into a cohesive design. CAD/CAM will bring your ideas to life with incredible detail and precision, allowing you to see what your piece will look like from all possible angles, without ever leaving the comfort of your home.

Once your piece is rendered into CAD and the design has been approved, a wax model can be created. This is a life size version of your design that you can try on, place your center stone in, and use to get a general feel for what the ring will look like on your finger. The photo of a bright yellow ring below is the wax model created from the CAD renderings. You can see where each diamond will be placed as well as the overall size and feel of the ring. All of the small bumps along the halos and band will become the prongs for the round brilliant diamonds that will be set in the finished ring. And yes, all waxes are made with extraordinarily bright colors. Why? It’s one of those mysteries of the universe, but they’re still fun to look at!

Once the wax is approved the ring can then be cast in metal. After the casting our skilled in-house bench jeweler will carefully set each stone and give the finished ring a final buff and polish. Then we place your masterpiece in one of our deluxe presentation boxes and ship it to your door! But the best part is when she wears it and everyone asks, “Who’s it by?” you can tell them that it’s an original couture design by you!

So, now that we’ve whet your Custom Design appetite, we’re going to throw you a curveball. Custom design… isn’t just for rings! That’s right, when we say the sky’s the limit, we mean it! Say for example you have a few silver spoons lying around that belonged to great great grandma. You only have two, so there they sit, slowly moldering away in a drawer.

Well, don’t just sit there, make something with them! One of my favorite custom projects did just that. Our talented artisans took the beautifully designed handles to both spoons and carefully shaped them to create the band for a stunning vintage watch. Now great great grandma’s silver can be actually enjoyed in a really beautiful way!

Or perhaps you’ve been perusing the mall and seen one of those fabulous cz necklaces that no one can ever afford in real diamonds because well, hello, our last name isn’t Trump.
