Buckhead Heritage Society Shines Lights on Athos Menaboni

Artist Widely Known For Bird Murals

Approximately 60 people attended the recent Buckhead Heritage Society program on the work of the late Buckhead artist Athos Menaboni, who is widely known for his murals, and research and paintings of birds. Sponsored by Paces Construction Company, the sold-out event also welcomed members of the Atlanta Audubon Society.

Guests were first treated to a viewing of the newly conserved Menaboni murals in the breakfast room at the May Patterson Goodrum House on West Paces Ferry Road at Arden. Barbara Hyde, Keeper of the 1933 Shutze-designed historic home being renovated by Tad Brown and the Watson-Brown Foundation, explained the conservation process and showed pictures of the room before work began.

The attendees then traveled a short distance to Spotswood Hall, a 1913 A. Ten Eyck Brown-designed home remodeled by Shutze in 1933, which has a rotunda entry with Menaboni murals. Conservator Jill Biskin discussed her conservation work on the Athos mural at Spotswood, owned by Jack and Juanita Markwalter, who hosted the group.

Guest lecturer Russ Clayton learned about Athos Menaboni’s work through Robert Woodruff. Sara and Athos Menaboni left their estate to Callaway Gardens, and Clayton is the Menaboni archivist at the Troup County archives, which possesses the largest archive of Menaboni papers and possessions. Several additional Menaboni pieces were on display for the event.
