Meeting Tonight on Flood-Plain Map Changes

Shook says state's adjustments could change building restrictions, insurance requirements

Hundreds of Buckhead properties will be placed either inside or outside current floodplain boundaries because the state of Georgia is updating official flood-plain maps, District 7 Councilman Howard Shook said in an e-mail.

"If you own such a property, you may face either the addition or subtraction of building restrictions and insurance requirements," Shook said.

Shook, who stressed that the update is not an Atlanta initiative, said property owners can go to http://www.georgiadfirm.com/ to see if their property is affected.

Although the update is a state undertaking, Atlanta’s Deptartment of Watershed Management will host a community meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the 308 Peachtree Hills Ave., in order to facilitate dialogue and assistance. Engineers, insurance specialists and other experts will be present to answer questions.

In addition, "my office will provide assistance as needed to direct impacted property owners to the appropriate state official," Shook said.
