Buckhead's Covenant Presbyterian Church Presents Pam Longobardi of the Drifters Project, Thursday, Nov. 13

Environmental artist Pam Longobardi, founder of the Drifters Project, will speak about creating art from trash found in the oceans.

Covenant Presbyterian Church (www.covenantpresbyterian.us) will present its final program of the 2014 Mitchell Speaker Series Thursday Nov. 13, 2014. Environmental artist Pam Longobardi, founder of the Drifters Project, will speak in the church’s Fellowship Hall at 7 p.m., and her presentation will be followed by a reception at 8 p.m. The program is free and open to the public, and the church is located at 2461 Peachtree Road in Buckhead.

Longobardi is a professor of art at Georgia State University and the founder of the Drifters Project, an environmental art intervention involving photography and installation focusing on plastic objects and their impact on our oceans. The artist, who has been featured in over 40 solo exhibits, collects, photographs and exhibits artfully arranged pieces of plastic trash that have traveled in and been transformed by ocean currents. Last year, she was the recipient of the $50,000 Hudgens Award, one of the largest art awards given in the nation.

Through her work, she has removed thousands of pounds of debris from the natural environment and re-situated the waste in exhibition context. Her artwork involves painting, photography and installation, and addresses the psychological relationship of humans to the natural world. In addition to her art, she has authored Drifters: Plastic, Pollution and Personhood. (www.driftersproject.net)
