Car Thefts Up in Buckhead This Year

This year's auto theft rate is up 20 percent from last year's figure at this time.

Atlanta police are urging Buckhead residents to be extra careful when parking their cars around the neighborhood due to a spike in car thefts this year.

According to the latest figures available from police (through July 11), there have been 238 car thefts reported in Buckhead’s Zone 2 so far this year. This is a 20 percent increase in the rate since this time last yer, when 199 cars had been stolen.

Police have only been able to arrest 15 car theft suspects in Zone 2 so far this year, the same amount of car theft arrests that had been made at this time in 2014. Police have recovered 110 of the 238 cars reported stolen this year, a 15 percent increase from the number of recovered cars at this time last year.

Other serious crimes are also on the rise in Zone 2; there has been a 22 percent increase in reported rapes, a 19 percent increase in reported burglaries, and a six percent increase in reported larcenies, the data shows.
