UPDATE: Child Accidentally Shoots Self at Northwest Atlanta Apartment Complex
The three-year-old is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

UPDATE (Aug. 15, 10:30 a.m.): Atlanta police now believe the three-year-old child who was shot at an Atlanta apartment complex Thursday night accidentally shot himself while playing with a gun, WSB-TV says.
The child was alone in a bedroom in an apartment at the Allen Hills complex on Middleton Road when he somehow got possession of a handgun and started playing with it. A neighbor told WSB-TV that she heard the child had shot himself in the face, but police did not independently confirm this.
The child is recovering at Childrenβs Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite. His condition has been upgraded from critical to stable.

ORIGINAL STORY (Aug. 14, 11:26 p.m.): Atlanta police are at an apartment complex in the northwestern part of the city attempting to discover how a three-year-old child was shot Thursday night.
FOX 5 Atlanta reports that police are at the complex at 2973 Middleton Road looking for clues and interviewing witnesses of the shooting. Witnesses told FOX 5 that they heard one or two gunshots.
