After Alabama, Mississippi loses, pressure grows on candidate to drop out of GOP campaign

Newt Gingrich's Southern strategy sputtered Tuesday, as Rick Santorum won the Mississippi and Alabama primaries.

Gingrich's second-place finishes in those states after wins in Georgia and South Carolina intensified pressure for him to leave the race, in which Mitt Romney leads in total delegates and Santorum has put together a string of wins.

The former House speaker vowed to stay in the race, despite the disappointing finishes, as the New York Daily News reported.

Political commentator Greg Sargent in his Washington Post blog said that if Gingrich drops out, it would allow conservatives to unite behind Romney.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Gingrich pressed on to Illinois, which has its primary March 20.
