A celebration will be held later this week to commemorate the reopening of a historic military settlement in Buckhead which saw service during the War of 1812.
BuckheadView reports that Atlanta City Councilwoman Yolanda Adrean will hold a ceremony to reopen Fort Peachtree at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Fort Peachtree is located at 2630 Ridgewood Road. Registration is free but required to attend the ceremony.

Fort Peachtree and the 15 acre site on which it sits hadnβt been open to the public since at least the 1996 Olympics, Creative Loafing reported last year.
In 2013, Adrean sponsored legislation which called for a $500,000 renovation of the fort, which was built 200 years ago during the last few months of the War of 1812. The renovation was paid for by the Department of Watershed Management and replaced a run down pavilion, restored a model of the original fort, and paid for security upgrades to the nearby water intake facilities.

Historical markers recognizing the Creek and Cherokee nations, who occupied the land before Fort Peachtree was built, were also repaired or installed. In fact, a large Creek city named Standing Peachtree located on the land gave the modern day Peachtree Street its name.
The renovated fort and its 15 acres of passive park space will now be available for use by Buckhead residents who until now did not have access to such recreational facilities.
