A young woman is the driving force behind a charity race that recently raised thousands of dollars for the Atlanta Humane Society.

Neighbor Newspapers reports that Haley Hooper organized the inaugural Kingswood Fun Run in 2010, when she was 9 years old. She passed out flyers to area homes to raise awareness of the event, and in the first year she was able to generate $500 to donate to the humane society.

Now in it’s fifth year, the Kingswood Fun Run has blossomed into a full-scale charity event, featuring prizes, sponsors, and a plethora of runners both young and old.

The course of the Kingswood Fun Run is staggered based on age groups: kids five and under run a quarter mile, kids aged six to eight run a half mile, and kids nine through 11 run a full mile. All of these races are on a flat course in the Kingswood neighborhood. Runners aged 12 and up run a mile-long course that goes up and down a hill in the neighborhood.

Hooper told Neighbor Newspapers that in the four previous years of the Kingswood Fun Run, she had raised a total of $4,900 for the humane society. This year, the humane society reports that the race raised $6,000 for them.
