In the early 1960s he was the first black member and later the second black president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and for many decades, his influence was felt throughout the city. In 1973, Mr. Russell was instrumental in helping elect Maynard Jackson as Atlanta’s first black mayor. His autobiography, published before his death in 2014, Building Atlanta: How I Broke through Segregation to Launch a Business Empire is a fascinating recount of his impact on generations of Atlantans.
