MARTA Mulls Charging for Parking

The transit authority is looking to generate more revenue, but is afraid of alienating riders who could drive instead.

MARTA is considering changing its long-standing policy of free parking at transit stations, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says.

According to the AJC, the transit authority has begun the search for a contractor who can, “[d]esign, deliver, install, test, operate, maintain, repair and replace (as needed) a fully Automated Parking Access and Revenue Control System” for almost a dozen long-term parking facilities. The AJC says that 23 of MARTA’s 38 stations currently offer free parking with some caveats.

MARTA planners are torn between the needed revenue paid parking would bring in, but do not want to lose out on riders who could drive to and from the city but use MARTA for convenience, the AJC reports.
