Mayor's Youth Scholarship Program Seeks to Remove Financial Barriers to Higher Education

The program is seeking contributions to increase its ability to empower underprivileged youth from the Atlanta area.

An organization committed to improving the future of Atlanta’s young men and women by softening the financial blow higher education can require is hoping to provide more power to the city’s aspiring college graduates through generous donations.

The Atlanta Mayor’s Youth Scholarship Program was launched in 2005 with the goal of making sure money doesn’t keep the city’s promising young men and women from poorer backgrounds from earning college degrees. The program offers up to $5,000 in scholarships per semester or up to $10,000 per academic year for covering the costs of unmet student obligations.

Since the program was launched, it has helped some 3,000 Atlanta students with their college financial needs. Last year, the program granted qualified students an average of $7,529.

This year, the program’s tenth, sees organizers shooting for $250,000 in donations, which will then be turned around and given to eligible students as scholarships. The program relies on generous donations from individuals, corporations, and other organizations to fulfill its goals.
