π± Monkey Pox On The Rise + Assault Victim Recovering 1 Year Later
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Buckhead.
Hello all! I'm back in your inbox this morning to walk you through all the most important things happening locally. Here's the lowdown...
First, today's weather:
Humid with some sun. High: 90 Low: 72.
Here are the top three stories today in and around Buckhead:
- The Department of Public Health says the state of monkeypox in Georgia is easy to overlook and undercount. Since the first case was reported in June, the state has had over 41 confirmed cases. The overwhelming majority of those cases are from the greater Atlanta area, among mostly Black and white men. None of the current monkeypox patients have died, and DPH has thorough instructions for prevention and isolation. (Reporter Newspapers)
- Joshua Dowd, the victim of a brutal Buckhead assault in 2021, is making strides one year after the attack. Doctors did not expect the 29-year-old to recover from his injuries, but Dowd has reportedly been making progress through speech, physical, and occupational therapy sessions. Dowd's partner of four years, Colin Kelly, has supported Dowd from the ICU to his intensive rehab program. (CBS 46 News)
- Some in Buckhead are fighting for the Atlanta residential district to become its own city. Cityhood efforts in Georgia can be traced to Oliver Porter, who previously fought for Sandy Springs to become its own town. Porter's concern had to do with the city's use of Sandy Springs' tax dollars as well as the development of apartment complexes, which he reportedly felt threatened the "home-feel" and "sense of community."
