No Indictment For APD Officer Who Killed Man

A Fulton County grand jury has decided against handing down a murder indictment against an Atlanta police officer for his 2011 killing of a man after a traffic stop.

Thomas Atzert shot and killed Maurice Hampton when Atzert said Hampton reached for his baton while the two were in a struggle, WSB-TV reports. Atzert had just pulled Hampton over for running a stop sign; Hampton fled the scene and Atzert gave chase.

Following the shooting, both the APD and the FBI investigated the incident, and both cleared the officer of wrongdoing. Additionally, Atzert won a civil case brought forward by Hampton’s relatives, WSB-TV reports.

After the grand jury decision, Atzert told WSB-TV that he was grateful to the grand jury and hoped that he and his family could put the situation behind them.
