Pay Raise, No Furloughs Attract Teachers to Fulton County

The school district was one of the few in metro Atlanta that was able to provide a pay increase to educators.

The Fulton County School System added hundreds of new teachers to their ranks over the summer due to a hiring pitch which boasted higher pay and zero furlough days.

According to WSB-TV, the 600 new educators include some of the most talented math, science, and special education teachers. Fulton County Schools Superintendent Robert Avossa told WSB that a three percent pay increase and the prospect of a full academic calendar were the selling points the system used to hire the new teachers.

Avossa also told WSB that he was hopeful the system’s math teachers would be allowed to instruct students “the old way,” and abandon the current Common Core curriculum.
