Researchers Confirm Number of People Buried at Graveyard at Buckhead Golf Course

The indigent cemetery is located near the fifth green at the North Fulton Golf Course

The operations director for the Chastain Park Conservancy noticed a familiar but unsettling symbol on an old map of the area near the North Fulton Golf Course in Buckhead, a discovery which led to the locations of dozens of graves on the property, reports Atlanta Magazine.

Ray Mock noticed a hand-drawn cross on the vintage map, and remembered the elderly and destitute people who used to live next to the golf course decades ago. Mock became concerned that people playing on the fifth green at the Buckhead golf course were treading on the graves of forgotten indigents.

Earlier this year, a team led by Len Strozier of Omega Mapping Services used state of the art technology to rediscover 86 unmarked graves that are believed to contain the remains of people consigned to the nearby β€œalmshouse.” The racially-segregated facility was closed in the 1960s but lives on as the Galloway School and the Chastain Arts Center.
