Special Election to be Held to Replace Buckhead State Representative
Tyrone Brooks resigned from office earlier this month and pleaded no contest to federal fraud charges.

Some Buckhead voters will soon be asked to go to the polls to pick a representative to succeed former Rep. Tyrone Brooks, who stepped down earlier this month.

A special election for Brooks’ empty seat in the General Assembly will be held on June 16 throughout House District 55, which includes a portion of Buckhead. A runoff election will be held on July 14, if needed, says the Georgia Secretary of State‘s Office.
According to the Secretary of State’s Office, qualifying for the special election will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 28 and 29, and from 9 a.m. to noon on April 30. Qualifying for the special election will cost $400.

Any House District 55 constituents who want to register to vote in this election must register before the close of business on May 18, the Secretary of State’s Office said,
Brooks resigned on April 9, the same day he appeared in federal court to plead no contest to five counts of mail and wire fraud and guilty to one count filing false tax returns, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He was indicted in May of 2013 after prosecutors claimed Brooks used nearly $1 million worth of donations meant for charities to pay personal and family expenses.
