Three Places to Learn More About Civil Rights

This weekend we celebrate MLK's birthday and his legacy. Here are three places to learn more about the civil rights movement in the south.

It took a tremendous amount of courage for Martin Luther King, Jr. and his band of Freedom Fighters to buck the system of segregation and demand civil rights. This weekend we’ll celebrate MLK’s legacy. Here are three places to learn more about civil rights.

Center for Civil and Human Rights. This is one of the best civil rights museums in the country. Exhibits put you in the middle of the struggle with a lunch counter simulation, and a walk on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel.

Oakland Cemetery. The best way to learn about the civil rights movement is to learn about the people who lived it. At Oakland Cemetery, take a free walking tour of residents who shaped Atlanta and the African American experience here.

Birmingham, AL. Less than three hours from Atlanta is Birmingham, AL. During the summer of 1963, Birmingham was the center of the civil rights struggle, and Kelly Ingram Park was the heart. A walking tour of the park takes you back to that fateful summer.
