UCCTU Sponsors Women's Fly Fishing Clinic

UCCTU recently hosted its first highly successful fly fishing clinic for women.

Take a crisp and sunny autumn afternoon, host 35 women and young girls from north Atlanta, add in 15 seasoned fly fishing instructors, conduct three hours of entry-level classes in the basics of fly fishing at the beautiful Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell, and what do you get? You get 35 newly-minted fly fishers eager to continue their training and ready to pursue their new sport – fly fishing.

The Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited (UCCTU) recently hosted its first highly successful fly fishing clinic for women and teenage girls who reside across the northern suburbs of Atlanta. Joining Trout Unlimited were representatives of Alpharetta Outfitters – a local shop featuring fly fishing and hiking gear.

Over the course of the afternoon, the participants were taught basic skills in four areas: fly casting, knot tying, stream conservation and fishing flies, and where trout live in the river and how to successfully find and catch them. Alpharetta Outfitters also set up a display of fishing gear that the participants could examine and try out.

The Women’s Fly Fishing Clinic was conceived by UCCTU in part to spread the word about the sport to area women interested in outdoor activities and to encourage their joining the UCCTU chapter.

Based on the comments received from many of the attendees, the chapter
will continue this new tradition and hold another clinic next fall.
