Wasted Commute Time: Atlanta is No. 9

Believe it or not, there are eight other cities where you waste more time in traffic than the A-T-L.

Atlanta is No. 9 in terms of average wasted time per commuter in 2015, according to a new report from Inrix, a transportation analytics firm.

Los Angeles is No. 1, according to the survey from the Kirkland, WA-based firm.

Commuters in Atlanta wasted 59 hours in traffic in 2015.

Here are the top 10 in the U.S. with the worst traffic rank in terms of average time wasted per commuter:

  1. Los Angeles, CA – 81 hours
  2. Washington, DC – 75 hours
  3. San Francisco, CA – 75 hours
  4. Houston, TX – 74 hours
  5. New York, NY – 73 hours
  6. Seattle, WA – 66 hours
  7. Boston, MA – 64 hours
  8. Chicago, IL – 60 hours
  9. Atlanta, GA – 59 hours
  10. Honolulu, HI – 49 hours

Here are some of the report's other key findings:

  • Los Angeles, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Houston, New York and Seattle rank as most congested cities in U.S., where commuters spent a total of 8 billion hours stuck in traffic in 2015.
  • The U.S. accounts for 50 percent of the top 10 metros with the worst traffic congestion across the U.S. and Europe; only London has worse traffic than top-ranked U.S. cities.
  • U.S. DOT’s $50 million Smart City Challenge, continued economic growth and declining gas prices are increasing momentum among U.S. cities to improve urban mobility.
