• $20k grant helps Grady County deputies upgrade gear to protect themselves and neighbors (wtxl.com) — Grady County Sheriff's deputies are getting 25 new bulletproof vests and 25 trauma kits thanks to a $20,000 Spirit of Blue Foundation grant, boosting safety for them and residents. A Cairo neighbor says the visible law enforcement presence already makes him feel safer, and EMS leaders stress how better-equipped deputies can start lifesaving care before ambulances arrive.
• Fishing history delivers Schmitt's third Bassmaster Elite title at Lake Champlain (anglerschannel.com) — Bass fishing fans in Cairo will be proud to see hometown pro Drew Cook finish fifth at the Bassmaster Elite event on Lake Champlain, just a pound behind the winner. Cook, listed from Cairo also grabbed contingency awards and big-bass honors on Day 1, keeping our local angling community on the national leaderboard.
