14 BCSS Students Named Governor's Honors Program Semifinalists

Out of twenty-four talented students selected as district nominees, fourteen will move on to the next level of state interviews.

From Bartow County: The nail-biting wait is over! Fourteen Bartow County students advance in the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, five more than last year.

Out of twenty-four talented students selected as district nominees, fourteen will move on to the next level of state interviews at Berry College on February 24, 2018. Congratulations to Woodland High juniors Ezra Petron (Communicative Arts), Heidi Hicks (Music: French Horn), Banta Sesay (Music: Trumpet), Stephen Willoughby (Science), Peter Germ (Science), Carris Adcock (Social Studies), Cass High sophomore Alexa Halpern (Communicative Arts), Cass High Juniors Jenna Keeler (Communicative Arts), Brianna Gonsahn (Social Studies), Cristian Alvarez (Social Studies), Grace Weeks (Theatre Performance), Adairsville High juniors Abby Herren (Science), Ryan Lance (Social Studies), and homeschool student Sarah Huffman (Dance).

“It warms my heart to see such talented students excel in academics and the fine arts areas,” says Paula Camp, the Governor’s Honors Program Coordinator. “Our students definitely have what it takes to compete with the other state semifinalists for these top spots in the Governor’s Honors Program. We take great pride in knowing our district, our schools and our families will be represented well by these outstanding students.”

Nearly 3,200 students across Georgia were nominated to the state level competition and more than 1,600 have been selected as semifinalists for state interviews or auditions. Finalists will be notified on March 30. The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program is a four-week, summer residential program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented sophomores and juniors new and challenging educational opportunities in a unique setting on the campus of Berry College. This life-changing program is fully funded by the Georgia General Assembly and will be held June 17-July 14.
