#Adulting Workshops Teach GHC Students Basic Life Skills

Adulting is the growing-in-popularity term used to describe things an adult should or know how to do.

CARTERSVILLE, GA -- Being an adult and trying to navigate the joys, heartbreaks, setbacks and accomplishments life throws one's way can be overwhelming. However, students at Georgia Highlands College now have an outlet where they can obtain practical skills they can apply to their everyday lives.

The college has rolled out an #Adulting workshop for its students. “Adult” as a verb or “Adulting” as a gerund may seem a little off, "but it is becoming more commonly used to explain the action of doing things an adult is expected to do or knowing how to do those things," the college said.

GHC spokesperson Nick Godfrey said college students, particularly those in their first two years at the institution, are most likely leaving home for the first time and are taking on whole other level of responsibility.

"The goal of this series is to give students a chance to learn some practical skills outside the classroom, like sowing up a tear in clothing or learning to change a tire, that they may or may not know or would like to know more about," he added.

Over the next few months, Georgia Highlands' workshops will tackle various topics. This month's theme was dubbed "Sewing Basics," and in October, students can learn all about how to take care of their vehicles (SIGN UP: Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Other topics that will be discussed in the future are etiquette, banking, resume and business basics. The fall lineup is all about personal improvement, while the spring lineup will focus more on job and career development skills.

GHC has partnered with several local businesses and other agencies to assist with the workshops, so students can get advice and lessons from experts in those fields.
