Here are the top three stories today in Cartersville:
- The Art in Bartow Commission launched the Iron Butterfly Trails Project in February with the installation of its first sculpture at Rose Lawn Museum. Art in Bartow Director Hannah Cook tells us to "keep on the lookout for a new Iron Butterfly installation at Dellinger Park. It will include hand painted Iron Butterflies, along with a statement piece aptly titled, 'Taking Flight.' (Daily Tribune News)
- Lillie Read, executive director of the Cartersville Downtown Development Authority, proposed three amendments to the city's downtown entertainment zone ordinance at a public meeting of the Cartersville Alcohol Control Board. Read's first request is to allow the DDA to issue silicone cups and plastic cups during its pub crawl events. The second DDA request called for expanding the downtown entertainment zone to include businesses along Stonewall and Noble Street. "To expand the hours of the open container district from Thursday, Friday, Saturday to Monday through Saturday," was Read's third request, which was denied. The Cartersville Alcohol Control Board voted to recommend the use of silicone and plastic cups during events but failed to agree on the proposed changes to the expansion of the entertainment zone. - Bartow's Ice Cream With a Cop started in 2018 and its latest event was for the fifth graders at Cloverleaf Elementary on Jan. 6. "It is an opportunity for us — law enforcement — to give back and have a positive impact on our students. Our goal is to build trust with our students, encourage them to make good decisions, let them know we care about them and that we are here to support them," said Donnie Scott, who serves as a police officer for Bartow County School Police. The law enforcement departments that participated in the event were the Bartow County School Police, the Cartersville Police Department, the Georgia State Patrol, the Kingston Police Department, and the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
