Bartow Schools To Up Security After Florida Shooting

Part of the security measures include a dozen access control systems on the schools' doors.

BARTOW COUNTY, GA — The Bartow County School System sent a press release to Patch in response to the horrible school shooting that took place Wednesday in Florida. Among the topics addressed were security measures Bartow schools are taking, including access control systems on school doors.

From the Bartow County School System:

Our hearts ache with our school family at Majority Stoneman Douglas High School. Selfless coaches, teachers and bright students were lost Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Images depicting pure panic and anguish, sounds of bullets hitting classrooms and survivor stories resonate in our minds. No family should have to go through that. Our thoughts are with those in Parkland, Florida.

After careful consideration and countless meetings, The Bartow County School System has decided to purchase access control systems for at least a dozen exterior doors at our schools. With the use of a specially designed card, staff members would have access to these exterior doors and more control over access points.

Within the next few days, we will also be conducting tests on our 911 buttons, which are already in place at our schools.

We would like to take these extra precautions and use them in addition to our security systems, current access control systems, cameras and resource officers who are highly trained in active shooter situations.

While we cannot prevent every situation from occurring, we will do our very best to protect our children. Remember, we are our brother’s keeper, an ethic of “see something, say something” is also an essential resource for our community.
