The accident occurred around 7:36 a.m. Oct. 1 when a vehicle driven by the male student hit the bus along Griffin Road, the Bartow County School System said in its press release.

The bus activated its amber lights to signal it was about to stop to pick up a student, the Georgia State Patrol added.

A Honda Civic, driven by 17-year-old Kyland Campbell-Fowler of Cartersville, “was approaching the bus from the opposite direction at a high rate of speed, traveled off the right shoulder, lost control and struck the front of school bus with its driver’s side door,” the state agency added.

Fowler had to be extricated from the Honda by fire workers and was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. No updates about the student’s condition has been provided.

The bus was carrying students from Adairsville Middle and High school students, and they were not injured in the crash.

Bartow County Schools spokesperson Cheree Dye said the students on the bus were transported to school, and met with school nurses and counselors following the accident.

Once at school, the students had breakfast and were given a chance to call their parents or guardians.

“Our prayers are certainly with our student driver involved in the accident,” Bartow County Schools Superintendent Dr. John Harper said. “We are awaiting more details on the student’s condition. We are thankful that no one else involved was injured.”

Charges are pending in the crash, the Georgia State Patrol added.
