CARTERSVILLE, GA -- The Cartersville City School System on Monday honored retiring School Board President Linda Benton for her longtime service to the district's student.
Benton, as many readers know, has served 23 years on the board, 16 of which as president of the Cartersville City School Board.
"Her dedication and passion for the school system is evident through her caring, thoughtful leadership of the school board and her earnest desire to do what is most beneficial for the Purple Hurricane family," the system said.

To honor her service, the system established the Linda Benton GateKey Community Service Scholarship, which will provide students the chance to earn a scholarship by "exemplifying" Benton through giving back to the community.
An initial donation of $20,000 was made to the Cartersville Schools Foundation, which hoped to raise a total of $40,000 to fund the scholarship. That goal was surpassed by 150 donors who contributed $53,452 towards the initiative, the system said.
