CASA Volunteers Needed In Bartow County

Training to become a Court-Appointed Special Advocate for children in the court system will begin Aug. 28.

CARTERSVILLE, GA — Many Bartow County children are having to shoulder burdens that are not of their doing, and volunteers are needed to help these youngsters navigate these stressful situations.

Court-Appointed Special Advocates, or CASAs, are needed to help children faced with court hearings, adjusting to new foster homes or transitioning to new schools. Bartow County CASA, a program coordinated by Cartersville-based Advocates for Children, will kick off training classes for these special volunteers on Aug. 28.

The CASA program trains people to help abused and neglected children in the Juvenile Court system. Volunteers assess a child's situation, and reports to the judge what ruling would be in the best interest of the child.

CASA volunteers come into the picture after a child has been removed from the home and enters the state court system. A judge appoints the volunteer, who begins researching the child's situation, including gathering details on the youngster's background and family, and attends court proceedings.
