'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' Comes To Cartersville
TheatreExtreme will bring this Tennessee Williams classic to audiences at 8 p.m. Sept. 16 at Stiles Auditorium.
CARTERSVILLE, GA -- TheatreExtreme’s first main-stage show of the season, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” will open Friday at Stiles Auditorium in Cartersville.

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is one of the most well-known shows written by Tennessee Williams and was one of the author’s favorite works. It received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955 and was made into a film with Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor in 1958.

The show takes place in a plantation house where the Pollitt family celebrates the 65th birthday of Big Daddy, as they sentimentally dub him. The mood is somber, despite the festivities, because a number of evils poison the gaiety. Greed, sins of the past and desperate, clawing hopes for the future spar with one another as the knowledge that Big Daddy is dying slowly makes the rounds.
Maggie, Big Daddy's daughter-in-law, wants to give him the news that she's finally become pregnant by Big Daddy's favorite son, Brick, but Brick won't cooperate with Maggie's plans and prefers to stay in a mild alcoholic haze the entire length of his visit.

Maggie has her own interests at heart in wanting to become pregnant, of course, but she also wants to make amends to Brick for an error in judgment that nearly cost Maggie her marriage. Swarming around Maggie and Brick are their intrusive, conniving relatives, all eager to see Maggie put in her place and Brick tumbled from his position of most-beloved son.
Directed by Jaimes Lee, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" kicks off at 8 p.m. Sept. 16. Other performance dates are 8 p.m. Sept. 17, 23 and 24; and 3 p.m. Sept. 18.
Cast members include Cassy Thaxton as Maggie, Kyle Redden as Brick, Dora Monica as Mae, David Ely as Gooper, Donna Young as Big Mama, Daniel Rich as Big Daddy, Christopher McAbee as Rev. Tooker, and Tom Owens as Doc Baugh.
