The crash occurred late Thursday afternoon along the interstate near exit 293, forcing the afternoon and early evening rush hour traffic to come to a stand still.
A vehicle traveling southbound failed to maintain lane, hit a traffic sign and crossed the median into the northbound lanes, spokesperson Tracey Watson said.

At that point, a northbound traveling vehicle was hit by one of the traffic sign support poles, which caused it to travel off the right side of the road. The vehicle then hit a bridge railing, traveled off the left side of the road and hit the guardrail in the median, Watson said.
The driver of the vehicle that was initially traveling southbound was not injured while the vehicle heading northbound was airlifted to WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
Bartow County Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Brad Cothran said crews planned to take the male driver to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, but had to divert to Kennestone due to a storm over the city.
Watson said charges are pending the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team’s investigation into the accident.
