Continuing to Improve Education

A Cartersville High School student has insights and suggestions for Georgia's Department of Education.

As a senior at , education is a part of my everyday life. Whether it's attending my high school for regular courses or participating in dual enrollment at , my involvement with Georgia's Department of Education is extensive.

Even though I am largely affected by the department's decisions and policies, my opinions and insights concerning high school students and their education have yet to be shared with the department.

As a high school student, I would like to see more class choices and variety for all students, no matter the school they attend. In my opinion, each student at his or her high school should be able to choose from a wide variety of class options, similar to college.

Today, many students are stuck choosing between the lesser of two evils when it comes to class choices. To fix this, I propose schools be required to offer at least two alternatives to all core classes.

For example, students who are interested in animals may do better in a zoology course than in the current required Biology course.

In addition, every school in the state of Georgia should be required to offer a minimum of three AP/IB courses to further accommodate students who are looking for a challenge. By doing this, schools will notice an increase in standardized test scores, as well as increased preparedness for college rigor for all students who choose to participate.

This will ultimately lead to a more educated and prepared student body across the state of Georgia.
