Longtime Cartersville Educator Dies at 86
Gwendolyn Marler taught school for 54 years and was a counselor until she was in her early 80's.

Gwendolyn Gatewood Marler, 86, of West Avenue, Cartersville, Georgia, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016 at her residence.

Mrs. Marler was born June 6, 1930, in Cartersville, Georgia, daughter of the late Thomas Grier Gatewood and Lula Taylor Gatewood. She was a lifetime member of Sam Jones United Methodist Church.
She began her teaching career in the Villa Rica School System and then returned to the Cartersville School System where she taught school for 54 years and was a counselor until she was in her early 80's.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Howard Marler in 2008. They were married for 50 years.
Survivors include a sister, Anne Johnson Gainer; a sister-in-law, Wylene Marler; nieces and nephews, Mark, Kay and Blake Eley, Pam and Larry Smith, Al, and Hallie Smith, Cary Anne and Ben Chambers, Dave Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. at Sam Jones United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Harris, Linda Kellogg, Bibby Morgan, Dr. John Cowan, Rev. Nena Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Owen Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sam Jones Marco Sunday School Class; Sam Jones Stephen Ministry or Cartersville High School Clipper Newspaper.
