Here are the top three stories today in Cartersville:
- Registration for Recovery Bartow's third Run for Recovery 5K is open through Jan. 22 at 11 p.m. The event will be presented at Sam Smith Park and costs are $25 for the 5K, $25 for the 1-Mile Run/Winter Walk and $25 to be a ghost runner. Recovery Bartow Executive Director Barbara Hoffman said, "We also greatly appreciate our 'ghost runners.' These are individuals who aren't able to join us at the 5K, but want one of the coolest 5K tees in town, and/or just want to support and promote the hope and reality of recovery for families and their loved ones suffering in addiction." - The 2023 Cartersville/Bartow County Martin Luther King, Jr. Candlelight Service held at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church on Jan. 15 had many speakers including Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Samir Patel. Prior to Patel's address, Pastor John Lampley remarked, "Dr. King said that everybody can be great because greatness is in service." Patel added to that with a challenge for the audience. "It is a time to serve," he said. "I challenge you to make their lives better." (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News)
- The Cartersville-Bartow Metropolitan Planning Organization met on Jan. 11 and gave the greenlight to several amendments to its transportation improvement program (TIP). Transportation Planner Tom Sills noted that those amendments weren't approved by the MPO, but that those amendments were put out for public review. The largest takeaway from the meeting is that the RCDC project has been pushed back because "right of way acquisition needs 30 months," said GDOT District 6 Planner Samantha Henry.
