According to the American Cancer Society, about 10 to 15 percent of all lung cancers are small cell lung cancer, which is named for the size of the cancer cells when seen under a microscope.

SCLC often starts in the bronchi near the center of the chest. It tends to grow and spread quickly, and it has almost always spread to distant parts of the body before it is found.

Michael Mathews is undergoing chemotherapy, and his sister said he cannot work or support his family, which includes a wife and two daughters.

“He is not one to take handouts but as his sister, it’s my job to make sure he and his family are taken care of,” Charmaine Mathews said. “The last thing I want is for Him to have to decide rather to put food on the table or get medicine that he needs to survive.”

Charmaine Mathews would like to raise a total of $20,000 to help the family with its needs. About $1,775 has been donated so far.
