Traffic Stop Leads To Recovery of Stolen Items

A Bartow County sheriff's deputy came upon the discovery when he pulled over a silver Honda Accord leaving a Cartersville mobile home park.

A traffic stop targeting a driver for allegedly not wearing a seatbelt resulted in the recovery of several stolen items.

Just after 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, a deputy with the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office pulled over a silver Honda Accord leaving the Friendly Lane Mobile Home Park on Mac Johnson Road in unincorporated Carterville.

According to an incident report released the agency, the driver -- Ashely Elaine Guffey of Kingston -- was informed she was stopped because she was not wearing a seatbelt and for an expired tag.

“As I spoke to her I observed two open, 12 ounce cans of Natural Ice,” the deputy wrote in his report.

Guffey’s passenger, Billy Dean Lingerfelt of Acworth, said they belonged to him. The sheriff’s deputy seized the cans, and returned to his vehicle to run both the man and woman’s identities through the Georgia Crime Information Center.

As he was waiting for the results to return, Lingerfelt allegedly opened the car door and took off running, according to the report.

Lingerfelt abandoned the escape attempt after about 50 yards, and was handcuffed and taken to the deputy’s patrol vehicle.

Upon examination, an observation was made by the deputy that the license plate decal and the number affixed to the tag did not match. Another search came back that the license plate was reported stolen from Chamblee.

Both Lingerfelt, 45, and Guffey, 30, were arrested. A search of the vehicle revealed a “high number” power tools, GPS devices, cell phone sand computer tablets, accordkng to the report.

A search of one item’s serial number -- a Samsumg Galaxy Tab 4 tablet -- returned a report that the device was allegedly stolen out of Coconut Creek, Florida.

Lingerfelt was charged with misdemeanor theft by receiving, misdemeanor theft by receiving stolen property from another state, open container and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer.

Guffey was also charged with misdemeanor theft by receiving and theft by receiving stolen property from another state and open container.

She faces an additional charge of adult safety belt requirements. They both were booked into the Bartow County Jail Wednesday afternoon.
