US Army Corps Of Engineers: Be Safe This Labor Day Weekend
Mobile District Commander Col. James DeLapp warns residents that water activities, while fun, can be dangerous.
From the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’: Labor Day weekend, the last big weekend of the summer, is quickly approaching and many of you will travel to one of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ recreations sites in Mobile District to enjoy a picnic, swimming, boating or other outdoor fun. Unfortunately, summer outings can quickly turn to tragedy when people don’t take safety considerations.
Mobile District Commander, Col James DeLapp, urges everyone to take safety precautions. “Mobile District’s lakes and rivers can and should be fun places for responsible water recreation, but it is crucial to be ever mindful of the drowning risks in any body of water,” DeLapp said. “With a little advanced preparation and responsibility, we can all enjoy a safe and fun Labor Day weekend here in the Mobile District.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year, more than 3,500 people drown in non-boating related incidents in the United States. Additionally, there are 332 boating-related drowning deaths annually in the United States. About one in five people who drown are children 14 and younger.

DeLapp encourages swimmers and boaters to learn to swim; never swim alone; and always wear a life jacket when swimming or boating.
“There are not many days of summer left. If you’re planning to swim or boat over the holiday weekend, I encourage you to visit one of Mobile District’s incredible recreation sites,” DeLapp said. “And, I encourage you to swim and/or boat safely, so you will come back next summer.”
