Why Did Embalming Become Popular During The Civil War?

The Bartow History Museum will tackle the subject during a lecture on Thursday, Sept. 29.

CARTERSVILLE, GA -- Next week, a former Bartow History Museum staffer will discuss the embalming process during the Civil War.

Elise Petersen's lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at the museum.

Petersen will discuss the increased necessity and the use of the process during the war, and how the perspective of death and loss changed during that period of time.

You will also learn more about the embalming industry’s pioneers and the rapid developments made in the practice between 1861 and 1865.

Interestingly enough, only a small number of soldiers were embalmed. Learn who qualified for and received embalming services, and how embalmers knew who to treat after battle.
