1. Back Columbus Blue distributes $30K in scholarship funds (nowgeorgia.com) โ€” A Columbus-based nonprofit, Back Columbus Blue, is awarding $30,000 in scholarships to local first responders and their children, including members of Columbus Police, Columbus Fire & EMS, and Columbus State University Police. Sixty $500 scholarships, funded by community-supported events like an annual golf tournament, recognize their service and help families with education costs.

Meet Columbus State's newest writer-in-residence at a welcome mixer for the poet (ledger-enquirer.com) โ€” You're invited to welcome poet Sarah Jordan, the new writer-in-residence at Columbus State University's Carson McCullers Center, during a mixer at McCullers' childhood home in midtown Columbus. Guests can meet her, tour the historic Stark Avenue house-museum, and help shape the community that will inspire her poetry and a public reading planned for November.

3. Departments hold memorial stair climbs to honor firefighters lost on 9/11 (wtvm.com) โ€” Columbus First Responders will host their second annual 9/11 memorial stair climb at Synovus Park this Saturday, honoring the 343 firefighters lost in the attacks. Participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories, wearing badges with individual firefighters' names. Proceeds support the Terry Farrell Firefighter's Fund, which aids first responders and their families across the region.

Ledger-Enquirer's owner expands portfolio with acquisition of newspapers in fourth state (ledger-enquirer.com) โ€” The nonprofit that owns Columbus' Ledger-Enquirer, the National Trust for Local News, is expanding again by acquiring the Vermont Community Newspaper Group. While the move mainly affects Vermont readers, it signals continued growth and stability for the Trust's portfolio, which already includes the Ledger-Enquirer and other Georgia papers under nonprofit ownership.
