Coal Mountain Intersection Gets Official Dedication
A ceremony was held Friday to give the name to the intersection of Highways 9 and 369 in Forsyth County.
CUMMING, GA -- The area has been known to locals as Coal Mountain since the 1800s. Now, it's official.
At a dedication ceremony Friday afternoon, the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 369 in Forsyth County north of Cumming was officially named Coal Mountain Intersection.
The county commission, Georgia Department of Transportation and Georgia legislature all gave their blessings to the renaming.

References to the Coal Mountain area can be found as far back as the 1870 Census.
Just north of Cumming, the area is home to Coal Mountain Baptist Church, established in 1886, and Coal Mountain Elementary School.

The crossroads has been a hub of commerce for more than 200 years. Through the years, the area has been home to a general store, Wofford Hatchery, Martin's Store, Coal Mountain Building Supply, Thomas Lumber Company and the office of Dr. William Bottoms.
The intersection was officially named via Senate Resolution 953.
Coal Mountain Intersection is the second Forsyth County intersection this week to get an official name.
Wednesday afternoon, at a dedication ceremony, the intersection of Highways 306 and 369 was renamed Hammond's Crossing.
Hammond's Crossing has long been an economic hub in north Forsyth County. The first general store was built there around 1897 by William Henry Hammond.
To this day, the Hammond family continues to run a business there, Hammond Fishing Center.
