Forsyth Woman Killed During Car Theft Attempt

The woman was a passenger in a car that had been stolen from the Shell gas station on Buford Highway.

CUMMING, GA β€” A woman from Cumming was killed Saturday in a crash during which she was a passenger in a vehicle stolen from a local gas station.

Andrea Allison, 38, of Cumming, was thrown from the vehicle after its driver, who was fleeing a sheriff's deputy, struck another car.

Shortly after 10 p.m., the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call that a vehicle had been stolen from the Shell gas station on Buford Highway near Samples Road. The victims were leaving their vehicle to enter the store when the robbers took it and fled.

A sheriff's office K-9 unit that was patrolling Buford Dam Road saw the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to stop and fled down Buford Dam Road into Gwinnett County.

As the pursuit continued, the driver of the stolen vehicle failed to negotiate a curve on Sycamore Road and struck another vehicle head-on. That vehicle held four occupants who were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Allison, who was a passenger in the stolen vehicle, was ejected in the crash. The deputy arrived several seconds after the crash and attempted to give CPR and use a defibrillator, but she died at the scene, the sheriff's office said.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, Alston Spence, 28, of Cumming, tried to run away but was caught and arrested, according to the sheriff's office. He was wanted for felony probation violation in Hall County. He is charged in Forsyth Coutny with felony theft by taking and fleeing and attempting to elude authorities.

Gwinnett authorities have charged him with felony homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, fleeing and attempting to elude, felony theft by receiving and a number of other charges.

He is being held in Gwinnett County Jail.

Following standard practice, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office internal affairs and training unit is investigating the pursuit as well.
