Scam Phone Calls Making Rounds in Forsyth County

In the call, reported by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, the caller claims to be from the IRS and asks the victim to buy a gift card.

CUMMING, GA β€” Forsyth County authorities are warning citizens about a wave of scam phone calls that have reportedly being making their way around the area.

In one instance, a resident told the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office that he received a fraudulent phone call from 1-844-422-7841. The person on the line claimed to be from the IRS and said the call's recipient owed money to the agency.

He was asked to go buy a gift card for $2,000 and use that to pay off the money owed.

The call's recipient didn't buy any cards or hand over money in any way, the sheriff's office said.

On a Facebook post about the call, several Forsyth County residents said they have received similar phone calls from different phone numbers.

Deputies urged residents not to respond at all if you receive a similar phone call. No one will ever ask you to buy a gift card to legitimately pay a traffic fine, taxes, a power bill or anything along those lines, the sheriff's office said.
