Hebron Coach Developing Basketball Players and Ambassadors for Christ

Hebron head coach Will Cantrell focuses on making his players great on and off the court.

The game of basketball presents many different scenarios that are representative of what players will go through in life. This season, the basketball team will learn that the same skills they use to handle adversity in basketball can be used off the court as well.

“In basketball, there are so many parallels that we can draw on and connect to what Jesus says about life,” head coach Will Cantrell explains. “We can parallel that into what we are currently going through on the basketball court and off.”

Coach Cantrell’s overall coaching philosophy is to help develop young men so they can be ambassadors for Christ.

“At a place like Hebron you have the leeway to talk about Christ, and how He interacts with basketball, what he has to say about working hard, sports, and more importantly, what he has to say about life,” Cantrell explained.

Giving your best and working hard is a lesson that always pays off in life. This team is learning that it applies to the game of basketball as well. A fancy record is great, but working hard in out of conference games will lead to success in the future.

“For the out of conference games, I always want to put us in the position where we are challenged and we are going to be exposed to more than just feeling good about ourselves,” Cantrell said. “It helps us as coaches and players to learn where we are weak and where we need to be better. We could very easily go out and schedule teams who we could more than likely beat. We could have a real fancy record, but we wouldn’t be learning anything. The only games that really mean anything are the region games.”

These hard-working players understand their strengths and turn them into success.

“Our players work so hard,” Cantrell said proudly. “We have a good grasp on what our strengths are, and what our weakness are. We don’t ever get out worked, and that is really all you can ask of any team as a coach.”
