Land Bank Authority accepts donation for development of affordable "pocket neighborhood" (local3news.com) — A new affordable "pocket neighborhood" is planned for a 1.3-acre city-owned parcel at Underwood Street and Dantzler Avenue in Dalton, now transferred through the Dalton-Whitfield Land Bank to a local nonprofit developer. Small owner-occupied cottages around a shared courtyard could break ground by year's end, as officials test this model to spur more affordable housing options in Dalton.
   

2. Near-record heat today; Storms return this weekend (atlantanewsfirst.com) — Dalton is under a heat advisory today from 1 to 8 p.m., with heat index values expected to reach around 105 degrees and dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors. The intense heat will linger through Labor Day weekend, with highs in the 90s and daily chances for storms that could bring brief heavy rain and gusty winds.
   

3. Dalton MSA jobless rate falls (daily-tribune.com) — Dalton's job market strengthened in July, with unemployment in the two-county Dalton metro area dipping to 3.6% as more residents found work compared to last year. The Georgia Department of Labor reports Dalton now has over 63,000 employed residents, even as total jobs and the labor force shifted slightly, offering a mixed but mostly positive snapshot for local workers and businesses.
   

4. Trial Begins in Pleasant Grove Park Quadruple Homicide (wdef.com) — Residents in Dalton are following the trial of 18-year-old Andres Jared Guzman, accused in the 2024 Pleasant Grove Park shooting that killed four young men, including two from Dalton. Prosecutors say a planned drug deal involving vape cartridges and marijuana turned into a deadly gunfight, while a cooperating witness described the robbery plan, aftermath, and efforts to hide guns, drugs, and evidence.
