1. Commissioners approve Decatur Square contract amendments (decaturish.com) — Decatur's City Commission has approved over $92,000 in contract amendments to keep the $8.5 million Decatur Square "Shake Up" on track for completion in November, adding green infrastructure, a new sculpture, and more shade. Commissioners also funded landscaping, asset management software, a street sweeper, and continued restoration work at Legacy Park, shaping how public spaces will look and function citywide.
2. Global Village Project expands space for refugee girls (decaturish.com) — In Decatur, the Global Village Project has moved from Decatur Presbyterian Church into a permanent campus on Shamrock Drive, allowing enrollment to grow from about 45 to roughly 100 refugee girls. The tuition-free school offers intensive English, trauma-informed support, and small classes, aiming to help newly arrived students catch up academically and transition successfully into local public high schools.
3. Decatur speed study: Public meeting set for Thursday (fox5atlanta.com) — Decatur is launching a citywide speed study that could lower speed limits on streets currently above 25 mph, and residents can weigh in at a public meeting at the Decatur Recreation Center. Data collection and community engagement will run through the end of the year, with final recommendations expected in January 2027 before any changes go to the state for approval.
4. DeKalb County BOE to consider approval of Dr. Norman C. Sauce III as Superintendent Finalist (ocgnews.com) — DeKalb County's school board, which oversees schools serving Decatur-area families, will vote Sept. 14 on naming Interim Superintendent Dr. Norman C. Sauce III as the official superintendent finalist. A final decision is expected Oct. 5, potentially shaping long-term leadership, stability, and academic priorities for students across the district.
5. Decatur FC reflects on 2026 season, prepares for next year (decaturish.com) — Decatur FC, the city's women's semi-pro soccer team, is regrouping after a challenging 2026 season that saw lower attendance but stronger fan loyalty at Decatur High's stadium. Leaders highlight local youth programs, free tickets for under-18s, and partnerships that aim to grow girls' soccer opportunities across Decatur while they plan for the 2027 season.
