Atlanta Man Convicted Of Murder In Candler Road Shooting: DA

The man told police he had heard the victim breaking into his car, leading to the June 2017 fatal shooting.

DECATUR, GA — An Atlanta man who was convicted Friday in the June 2017 fatal shooting of another man he suspected of breaking into his car is scheduled to be sentenced this week.

DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston said Monday Josiah Gilbert, 31, was convicted by a jury on charges of voluntary manslaughter, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Atlanta Police responded on June 23, 2017, to the Candler Road apartment shooting.

Gilbert was accused of telling police he grabbed his handgun after hearing someone break into his car. He was then accused of shooting at the victim nearly 40 yards away, hitting the man in the back of the head. The man later died of his injuries.

DeKalb Superior Court Judge Yolanda Parker-Smith is set to sentence Gilbert Friday.
