Higher Calling Christian Academy (HCCA) is a faith-based learning community located in South DeKalb County dedicated to helping children grow academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively in a safe and nurturing environment. Our Summer Camp 2026 theme, “Choose Your Adventure: A Summer of Discovery at HCCA,” gives families the flexibility to enroll their child for the entire summer or select individual weeks based on their child’s interests. Throughout the summer, campers ages 5–12 will experience engaging, hands-on learning through themed weeks focused on gardening and sustainability, STEAM exploration, sports and teamwork, entrepreneurship, leadership, and creative discovery. Campers will participate in exciting activities including outdoor exploration, science experiments, engineering challenges, team games, creative arts, field trips, and youth business projects. A strong focus of our summer program is literacy and enrichment. Campers will participate in daily reading and enrichment activities designed to strengthen comprehension, creativity, communication, and critical thinking skills. As part of our literacy initiative, campers will visit the local public library twice each week to participate in summer reading opportunities, explore new books, and develop a love for reading and learning. What makes HCCA unique is our commitment to combining fun, enrichment, and purpose in a supportive Christian-centered environment. We strive to support the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of every child while encouraging creativity, confidence, leadership, and exploration. Nearly 60 residents of Avondale Estates and friends converged recently to celebrate the 80th anniversary of  the local garden club. The Avondale Estates Garden club was founded in 1931. The celebration took place June 5, which was during National Garden Week. During the festivities, Avondale Mayor Ed Rieker highlighted the Avondale Estates Garden Club's accomplishments during the last eight decades. The first project was the planting of 253 abelia bushes between Covington Highway and South Avondale Road in 1932, according to a release. The fragrant hedge is distinctive in the metro Atlanta area and part of what makes Avondale an "enchanted forest," according to residents. The mayor also praised the current garden club president Faye Boyd for her dedication and work in the community, including the annual planting of the East and West Entrance signs and flower boxes at the clock tower. Volunteers from the garden club have funded and completed the plantings for many years with the help of expert city employees. Reception attendees included Avondale Estates Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem David Milliron; the president of the DeKalb Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., Wanda Moore; and past garden club president Rigby Duncan, as well as several other officers from the DeKalb Federation. Lorene Faulkenberry, director of the Redbud District, Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., and former district director Joy Zaidan also attended.
