Changes to the Property Tax Assessment and Appeals Process in the State of Georgia
Be On The Lookout For Your 2011 Property Tax Assessment Notices...

The assessed value of your real property drives the amount of property tax you pay. In 2011, new legislation has been passed that requires all Georgia counties to mail an assessment notice to property owners each year - regardless of whether or not your assessed value has changed. This notice will effectively notify every property owner of their opportunity to appeal the assessment in the event they do not agree with the assessed value.
For Avondale Estates, Decatur and Intown Atlanta residents of DeKalb County, the DeKalb County Annual Assessment Notices will be sent to every homeowner in mid-May.
You will then have 45 days to appeal if you do not agree with the current value identified in the notice. Summary information on how to appeal your your assessed value once notice is received, can be found in the PDF document associated with this post, or by visiting the Dekalb County Property Tax Appeal Process website.
