Daddy's girl
www.kidsenabled.org is a nonprofit for the learning differences community.
I am a Daddy’s girl. I always have been. I am the 3rd girl and needed to be #1 in someone’s eyes. I loved my mother dearly but I decided that Daddy was the way to go when becoming the favorite. I would do anything to be around him. I would go with him to play golf instead of going to the beach with my sisters – I don’t like golf. I would even go to the symphony with him – I dislike symphony music more than I do golf. You get the point.
Then my little brother came along when I was 6. What? My parents seemed too old to have kids. And, worst of all, why did the “new one” have to be a boy? This was going to be bad, really bad. I now had real competition. Everyone knows that dads want a son to play ball with and to bond over the remote control with. I asked my mom repeatedly to return him to the hospital but nooooo, he was going to be a permanent fixture in our family.
Luckily, I outgrew my disdain for the new kid. It helped when I did not see my dad’s devotion to me falter as a result of this boy entering our world. In fact, I realized that he could pay attention to my brother and sisters while still treating me like the favorite. I didn’t realize until I was an adult that he treated all of us like we were his favorite – that sneaky devil.

Now, I get to watch Todd do the same juggling act with our children. Lane and Leah both would swear that they are their father’s favorite. He is very involved with their soccer, school and social lives. While he doesn’t favor Lane, he does have a special understanding since they share ADD. He “gets” him and can speak his language in a way I can’t. I am so glad that Todd is the involved and supportive father that he is.
Kids Enabled wants to honor all our dads this Father’s Day. My hat goes off to each of you – thank you for all you do for your favorite children!
