Woman's Security Camera Hacked: 'I Can See You,' Stranger Says

A Brookhaven woman was lying in bed when a stranger yelled via the Ring security camera that he could see her.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA —After a Brookhaven couple's Ring security camera was hacked, the terrified woman said a strange man yelled that he was watching her via the camera, WSB-TV reports. The doorbell company says that the camera wasn't hacked, but that the couple used a password that had been leaked or compromised.

The woman, who didn't want to be identified, shared the video from Monday's incident with the station. The victim said she and her boyfriend installed the camera to watch their dog, Beau, while they're at work.

When she noticed a light on the camera, she texted her boyfriend to ask why he was watching, and he replied that he wasn't. That's when the stranger spoke to her through the camera: "I can see you in the bed! C'mon! Wake the [expletive] up!"

A Ring spokesperson told Patch that they haven't been able to conform that the incident was related to a breach or compromise and are still investigating the issue. They also stated they are "taking appropriate steps to protect our devices based on our investigation."

"Customer trust is important to us and we take the security of our devices seriously," the company said in an email statement.

"Due to the fact that customers often use the same username and password for their various accounts and subscriptions, bad actors often re-use credentials stolen or leaked from one service on other services. As a precaution, we highly and openly encourage all Ring users to enable two-factor authentication on their Ring account, add Shared Users (instead of sharing login credentials), use strong passwords, and regularly change their passwords.
